Background

As a user of Gomart, an app for an Asian supermarket, I find myself feeling overwhelmed every time I open it. Despite my efforts to find the products I want to buy, I get lost on the homepage, category page, and even the search page. This frustration has prompted me to take actions and redesign the app.

Problems

One of the main issues with the Gomart app's homepage is the overwhelming amount of information presented in a disorganized manner.

The labelling system used for categories is also disorderly, making it difficult for users to navigate the app.

Additionally, the search function does not effectively assist users during their journey.

Goals

The primary goal is to improve the information architecture of the Gomart app by enhancing the organizational structure, labelling systems, navigation systems, and search systems. By doing so, users will be able to easily find the products they are looking for and have a more seamless experience while using the app.

Starting the design

Research

Before beginning the design process, I conducted a competitive audit and found differences in preferences between local supermarket apps and Asian supermarket apps. To gain further insight, I interviewed two Asian users and generated two key insights:

1. Labelling categories with pictures makes navigation easier for users.

2. Users rely heavily on the search function when shopping.

The hierarchy of categories

After conducting research, I reviewed and updated the content and then built a user-friendly hierarchy based on customers' natural mental models of shopping and the common categories found in Asian supermarkets.

Paper wireframes

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on learning knowledge for healthy food and planing meals weekly.

Takeaways

User needs are the foundation of design. It's important to inquire about the process users go through, rather than focusing on the tools they use.

Progressive disclosure is a crucial aspect of creating clear navigation. By revealing information only when needed, users are less likely to feel overwhelmed.

Maintaining clarity and simplicity in design is essential to prevent overwhelming users. By presenting information in a straightforward and easy-to-understand manner, users are more likely to feel in control and confident in using the product.
