Apple's Fitness

...

Welcome to a journey of user-centric design as we explore the creation of a data comparison user flow for Apple's Fitness App. As a UX Designer, I embarked on this project in July 2023 with the intention of enhancing the user experience for fitness enthusiasts. This case study showcases the process, insights, and outcomes that evolved over the course of this design endeavor.

Project Overview

My Role
UX Designer
Duration
July 2023
Platform

Hunch

I recognized the challenge faced by dedicated fitness users in comparing their workout progress over time due to the app's limited structure. Individual workout details were isolated, hindering comprehensive comparisons.

Goals

Simplify the evaluation of workout progress over time by introducing a streamlined data comparison user flow.

Design Progress

Desk Research and User Interviews

A comprehensive exploration spanning landscape reviews, expert evaluations, and insightful user interviews was conducted to conscientiously address pivotal inquiries surrounding workout data.

Affinity Map and Insights:
...

User interviews revealed insights:

1. Cardio workout data's significance.

2. Priority metrics: burned calories, movement time, heart rate.

3. Goal-setting's role in motivation.

Guided Recommendations

Based on these discerning insights, meticulous recommendations were crafted:

1. Prioritize cardio workout tracking with dedicated sections.

2. Emphasize key data like burned calories and heart rate for user engagement.

3. Introduce benchmark-setting to celebrate milestones.

Paper Wireframes

Based on the recommendations, I drew paper wireframes of the user flow.

Usability Testing and Iteration

Employed paper wireframes for usability testing in face-to-face sessions, yielding valuable observations:

1. Participants struggled with past record access.

2. Entry point confusion for analysis and comparison.

3. Icon familiarity impacted discoverability.

Enhanced Recommendations

These insights steered the refinement of recommendations:

1. Improve access to past records through multiple entry points.

2. Actively display and compare workout records for easier analysis.

3. Position icons closer to data areas for better discoverability.

High-fidelity Wireframes

Translated recommendations into high-fidelity wireframes:

• Homepage: Displays current workout details. Clicking on specific days reveals tailored details.

• Workout Time: Clicking reveals all workout times over chosen days.

• Details Page: Offers comprehensive info about a selected day.

• Comparison Page: Showcases multi-day workout data for easy comparison, aided by customizable filters.

• Setting Benchmarks: Users can mark special workouts as benchmarks. These benchmarks appear prominently during data comparison.

Takeaways

Throughout the journey, mid-fidelity wireframes and prototypes were crafted, embodying the iterative design process. This case study underscores the profound value of user research in guiding design decisions, ensuring that user needs remain at the heart of every step. The outcome exemplifies how thoughtful design solutions can simplify the complex task of data comparison for fitness enthusiasts within Apple's Fitness App.
